Just a short ferry ride from Brisbane, Moreton Island National Park and Recreation Area lies a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Discover crystal-clear creeks and lagoons, coastal heath, rocky headlands, stunning wildflowers and miles of sandy beaches. Visit Queensland’s first lighthouse at Cape Moreton, built in 1857 from island sandstone. Feel the cool sea breeze as you stand atop the island’s headland, marvelling in breathtaking island and bay views. Keep an eye out for migrating humpback whales (May to November), turtles, dolphins and other marine animals in the surrounding waters.
Climb the southern hemisphere’s tallest vegetated sand dune, Mount Tempest, and be rewarded with panoramic views out over the bay. Wander through the ruins of Rous Battery, a frontline defence in World War II, and imagine life as a solider living among the dunes.
Stroll over vast sand blows at The Desert, created over thousands of years by currents and prevailing winds moving individual grains of sand. Cool off in Blue Lagoon, a freshwater oasis set amid flowering heathland, perfect for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding.
Come for the day or take your time on an extended camping adventure.
