Sydney Observatory, (1858) occupies a heritage-listed sandstone building in The Rocks on Observatory Hill. It boasts panoramic views of Sydney Harbour. The Observatory is set amongst a beautiful garden which recreate the original layout and vegetation of formal 1880's gardens. Sydney Observatory is one of the most significant sites in Australia’s scientific history. It has a central role in the history of timekeeping, meteorology and astronomy. Daytime tours explore the southern sky via telescope. A clear day offers visibility of the Sun, possibly the Moon and Venus. At night, learn some of the basics of astronomy including celestial navigation using the Southern Cross, planetary movement along the ecliptic and the seasonal constellations of the southern sky. All tours are led by expert astronomers, who love to share their knowledge on all things astronomy – be sure to bring your big questions. The Observatory is free to walk around the grounds, fort remains and exhibitions. Bookings essential for night or day telescope tours. Due to current advice on public gatherings, please contact the host of this event to confirm it is proceeding as planned.
