Red Edge utilises traditional artisan winemaking strategies maturing wines in barrels for 18-24 months, building upon the philosophy of creating wines that reflect the unique Cambrian soil, aspect and climate of Heathcote. Red Edge comprises one original hectare of Shiraz vines, planted in 1971, growing on a strip of 510 million year old Cambrian soil. Further plantings on adjacent blocks in the late 90s have expanded Red Edge to 14 hectares with some other classic European varieties including Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mouvedre. The vines are dry grown with yields of less than 2.5 tonnes per hectare. Individual vineyard wines are only made from estate grown fruit. The vineyards are hand pruned, hand-picked, and the wines made with minimal intervention on site, in our dedicated winery. Winemaker, Peter Dredge, has been the steward of these vines, owning and operating Red Edge since he and wife Judy, bought the property in 1994. Completing an agricultural science degree from The University of Melbourne, Peter has almost 40 years of winemaking experience, celebrating Red Edge's 25th anniversary in 2019.
