Whether you’re going solo or with a group, travelling can be a daunting experience. From what to pack to how to avoid homesickness – there’s plenty to keep your mind wandering. We’ve collected some of our favourite tips to help you on your first getaway;

Don’t assume things will be like they are at home.

Be alert and aware: keep your eyes open to what is going on around you.

Ask questions; find out more about where you are visiting and learn from those you encounter.

Learn as many basics as you can about the local language. Use them as much as you can and give displays of respect to initiate in conversation.

Manners are your best friend.

Enjoy all the touristy attractions that are available, but make sure you explore the often hidden marvels.

Experience street food – it’s a local favourite for a reason.

Smile often and laugh often – you’ll find you’ll make more friends this way.Celebrate festivities, local customs and traditions.

Learn about the religions and beliefs carried within your destination – how do they affect the culture around them?

Don’t rely on technology for getting you places. Have a backup map in case the app decides to crash

Take each day as it comes – sometimes the best plans are made in spontaneity.

Ensure you’ve got travel insurance (it may just be your best friend).

Keep your passport safe at all times – guard it with your life.

Keep a journal on where you go and what you do, or take plenty of photos.

Create a list of experiences you want to tick off in your time away and make sure each of them are fulfilled.

Pack appropriately and ensure you have left room for souvenirs.

Allocate a daily spend so you don’t blow your budget too soon.

Have a backup plan – what if you become stranded because your flights are cancelled or you’ve run out of money?

Ensure all of your emergency contacts are easily accessible at all times.
