Airlines in Europe and North America have offered in-cabin pet travel for years, but the concept has been slower to develop in Australia. That changed when Virgin Australia introduced its Pets in Cabin service in October 2025, becoming the first Australian airline to allow small cats and dogs to travel in the aircraft cabin on select domestic routes.

The initial trial routes included flights between Melbourne and the Gold Coast, as well as Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast. The success of the program has demonstrated strong demand from Australian travellers who want to bring their pets along for holidays or family visits.

Expanding the Pets in Cabin Network

Following strong customer interest, Virgin Australia has announced plans to expand the Pets in Cabin service to include additional destinations such as Adelaide and Launceston after the Easter holiday period, subject to airport approvals.

The airline expects to welcome its 1,000th pet passenger soon, highlighting how quickly the service has grown since its introduction. According to company representatives, the response from customers has been overwhelmingly positive.

Virgin Australia’s Chief Marketing and Customer Operations Officer noted that many Australians view pets as part of the family, and the ability to travel together removes a major barrier when planning trips or visiting loved ones.

How the Pets in Cabin Service Works

The Pets in Cabin program allows small cats and dogs to travel in the aircraft cabin in approved carriers. To ensure safety and comfort for all passengers, the service includes several guidelines.

Pets must remain inside a soft-sided, leak-proof carrier that fits under the seat in front of the passenger for the entire flight. The combined weight of the pet and carrier must not exceed 8 kilograms, and only a limited number of pets—typically four—are permitted on each flight.

Passengers travelling with pets are assigned designated seats within specific rows of the aircraft to ensure a controlled environment for both pet owners and other travellers. These rules help maintain safety standards while allowing passengers to travel comfortably with their pets.

The ability to travel with pets in the cabin offers several advantages for travellers. For many pet owners, leaving their pets behind during trips can be stressful. In-cabin travel allows owners to keep their animals close and monitor their well-being during the journey.
