Major sporting events are proving to be much more than a day of competition. They are becoming significant tourism drivers, bringing thousands of visitors into Australian cities and creating strong demand for accommodation, flights, dining and local experiences.

The 2026 TCS Sydney Marathon demonstrated this impact, with hotel bookings around the event’s start and finish areas increasing by 49 per cent year-on-year. More than 40,000 runners took part in the marathon on August 30, creating a significant boost for Sydney’s visitor economy.

Accommodation Demand Surges Across Sydney

According to Trip.com data reported by Travel Weekly, hotel bookings across North Sydney and the Sydney CBD increased 49 per cent compared with the previous year. Online interest was even stronger, with hotel searches climbing 69 per cent around the event.

The increased demand was not limited to accommodation. Domestic flight bookings to Sydney rose 47 per cent year-on-year during the marathon period, while international flight bookings increased 31 per cent. Overall search demand across Sydney flights and hotels was up 47 per cent.

These figures demonstrate the wider economic influence that major sporting events can have. Runners rarely travel alone, with partners, families, friends and supporters often joining them. As a result, the benefits can spread beyond the event itself to accommodation providers, restaurants, attractions, transport operators and retailers.

Sydney Marathon Builds Its Global Reputation

The Sydney Marathon's international profile has increased significantly since becoming an Abbott World Marathon Major in 2025. It is now the only event in the prestigious series held in the Southern Hemisphere, placing Sydney alongside globally recognised marathon destinations including London, Tokyo, Boston, Berlin, Chicago and New York.

Interest in the 2026 event reflected that growing status. More than 123,000 runners entered the ballot, representing a 56 per cent increase from 2025 and the highest number in the event's history. Ultimately, more than 40,000 runners representing over 140 countries participated.

The marathon's economic importance is also growing. Destination NSW reported that its first year as a World Marathon Major generated more than $100 million for the state's visitor economy, while the 2026 event was expected to surpass that figure.

International Visitors Are Staying Longer

One of the most significant trends for the accommodation industry is the length of stay associated with major events.

International visitors attending the Sydney Marathon booked an average stay of 4.2 nights, an increase of 26 per cent year-on-year. Rather than arriving only for race day, visitors are extending their trips to experience more of Sydney.

This creates opportunities beyond traditional short-term hotel stays. Travellers combining sporting events with holidays, remote work or additional travel may seek larger and more practical accommodation options. For guests requiring extra space and everyday amenities,  furnished serviced accommodation in Sydney can provide an alternative for multi-night and extended stays, particularly when travellers value kitchens, laundry facilities and comfortable living areas during a longer visit.

The Rise of the “Sportcation”

The Sydney Marathon also reflects the growing popularity of the “sportcation” – travelling specifically to participate in or watch a sporting event while building a wider holiday around the experience.

For Sydney, the benefits of this trend are substantial. International marathon participants booked accommodation well ahead of their arrival, securing hotels an average of 82 days in advance. Domestic travellers booked an average of 67 days ahead. Mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore were the three leading international markets for hotel bookings close to the marathon.

This longer booking window gives accommodation operators an opportunity to prepare for demand generated by major events and communicate directly with travellers planning their trips months in advance.

Opportunities for Serviced and Corporate Accommodation

While hotels naturally experience strong demand during major events, serviced apartments and professionally managed furnished accommodation can also play an important role.

Visitors travelling with family or staying for several days may prefer the additional space of an apartment. Separate bedrooms, kitchens, laundry facilities and living areas can make longer stays more comfortable, particularly for travellers balancing event participation with sightseeing or business commitments.

Major events can also affect corporate accommodation demand indirectly. When hotel occupancy rises sharply, businesses arranging employee travel, relocations or project stays may face reduced availability in popular locations.

Professional accommodation providers can help businesses plan ahead, particularly when major events coincide with conferences, corporate projects and other periods of high travel demand.

Major Events Deliver Benefits Beyond Race Day

Sydney's experience demonstrates how major sporting events can generate benefits well beyond the starting line.

Destination NSW said the marathon brings a significant global spotlight to the city, with a broadcast audience of more than 20 million viewers. This international exposure can encourage future visitation while strengthening Sydney's reputation as both a sporting destination and a major global city.

For the accommodation sector, the message is equally important. Major events create concentrated periods of demand, but they can also encourage longer stays, earlier bookings and repeat visits.

As sporting tourism continues to grow, accommodation providers that understand these changing travel patterns will be better positioned to meet the needs of both leisure and business guests. From marathon runners extending their trip to corporate travellers navigating a busy event calendar, flexibility, location and comfortable longer-stay accommodation will remain important parts of Sydney's evolving visitor economy.
