Melbourne Airport has achieved a historic milestone, recording its busiest year ever for international travel and reinforcing its position as Australia's largest 24-hour aviation gateway. During the 2025–26 financial year, almost 37 million passengers travelled through Melbourne Airport, marking the busiest 12-month period since the airport opened in 1970. International travel reached a significant milestone, surpassing 12 million international passengers for the first time, with 12,256,328 travellers arriving and departing on more than 57,000 international passenger flights.

The airport also recorded its busiest single month on record in December 2025, when more than 3.42 million passengers passed through its four terminals. China remained Melbourne's largest source of international visitors by passport country, contributing more than 636,000 arrivals over the financial year. New Zealand followed as the second-largest market, while India, the United Kingdom, and the United States rounded out the top five international visitor markets. Notably, arrivals from the United Kingdom experienced one of the strongest growth rates, increasing by 9.4 per cent compared with the previous year.

Although passenger numbers in June were slightly lower than the previous year due to reduced airline capacity on some Middle Eastern routes, airport officials noted that services through Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi are progressively returning as regional conditions stabilise. Domestic travel also remained resilient, increasing by 2.2 per cent across the financial year despite some reductions in airline seat capacity.

Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer Lorie Argus said the record passenger numbers reinforce the importance of continued investment in aviation infrastructure to accommodate future growth. The airport has already committed to a $4.5 billion expansion program, which includes major upgrades to the international terminal, construction of a third runway, and improvements to the surrounding road network. One of the first visible improvements will arrive later this year when the airport opens significantly larger free pick-up and drop-off areas within its new T123 Transport Hub.
